It explores gendered and racialised social reproductive labour through the practice of traditional black-eyed pea ("louvi") preparation, a ritual familiar to most people who have spent time in Cyprus. Like many other time-consuming domestic tasks, the practice is an opportunity for gathering and "κουσκούς," meaning gossip or chit-chat. I approached the labour of this practice as an area of embodied technique - as epistemic in nature, containing and encoding knowledge not only about cooking and nourishment, but about identity, place-making, gender, rituals of gathering and being together, and histories of violence and dispossession that always, in Cyprus, lie just beneath the surface of everything. I took the ritual of louvi preparation as a social form to be reenacted and expanded, and the artistic research process was guided by this aim. I sourced 30kg of fresh louvi for the performance, which I estimated would take four hours to shell, with the help of the public. I met and spent a morning with the couple who produced the crop in their field, located in the buffer zone near the village of Akaki. During this visit, Mr. Kostis and Mrs. Toulla shared histories of the land and their relationship with it, as well as local histories of conflict and struggle. I created a multi-channel sound installation using these oral histories, as well as my own vocal improvisations and sounds derived from found objects. I wrote a script (with both English and greek-Cypriot versions) to be performed by the audience during the performance itself. The script included aspects of the oral histories not included in the sound installation, as well as theoretical material on Nancy Fraser’s concept of “boundary struggles,” and narratives on place-making and situated feminisms drawn from the symbiotic relationship between louvi and nitrogen-fixing rhizobia, which, together, regenerate the soil in which the plant grows. &nbsp; <img Oral histories - Mr. Kostis and Mrs. Toulla; script-readers - Belinda Papavasiliou, Ioulita Toumazi and Miriam Gatt. ● Μουσικός Περίπατος στη Βάβλα / Musical Promenade in Vavla took place in the mountainous village of Vavla in the Larnaka district of Cyprus. I co-produced and co-curated this festival with other community members, and also performed songs of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands with Veronika Aloneftou and Elena Xyda. The event included seven acts performing in traditional houses, courtyards and stone-paved streets of the village, followed by a DJ set in the centre of the village, with various homemade local products on sale. It also involved an art exhibition by local painter Paskalis Anastasi, whose painting “Vavla Village, Morning Light” is featured in the poster and brochure. &nbsp; The event was held under the auspices of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture as part of the 2023 Cultural Decentralisation Program, with additional support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Here is a short text I wrote about the release: This little song was copied by Anna Magdalena Bach into her musical notebook, sometime around 1725. The song used to be attributed to J.S. Bach, but actually it is probably by the composer Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel. ∞It is one of many songs and arias in the notebook that take death as their subject in a manner that expresses the Lutheran concern with the spiritual practice of ars moriendi, the art of dying. ∞When Lefteris, Andreas, Fred and I gathered to record my album Abundance, I hadn’t decided to put this song on it. But, being an album of ritual, transition, celebration and devotion, it made perfect sense when Fred suggested it.∞ The song is about leaving this world with confident assurance of salvation in Christ. It begins, "If you are with me, I will go joyfully / To my death and to my rest."∞Since the time of recording, I have learned a deeper lesson about the importance of ars moriendi, of practicing a relation to death, of preparing to greet death with a radiant and devotional gratitude for living.∞I feel that music is at its deepest level of sedimentation a devotional practice, a spiritual practice, and I've always been struck by the devotional power of this song. The absolute foreverness of those words. ∞As with all acts of making, this version grew from many seeds. One of them is a birthday present I made for Fred many years ago, a layered recording made in my bedroom with the melody of the song woven into lines from Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet. ∞It was an afterthought, and we recorded it last, and it will appear last on the album, as it does here in this compilation. It is a final song, but not a song of ends. The article is part of a broader focus on decolonising performance, with which I am currently engaged in both my scholarly and artistic practice.&nbsp; 2022 February&nbsp;My PhD thesis “A Handbook of Situated Making” is available to download from the University of Huddersfield thesis repository. It was just under four years in the making and I am very proud of it. My supervisors were Ben Spatz and Philip Thomas.&nbsp; 2021 April Lucy Railton and I continued our text and music collaboration with the release of&nbsp;Subaerial, an album of improvised music that Lucy made with Kit Downes, recorded in Skáholt Cathedral, Iceland. I wrote the liner notes for the record, which can be read by purchasing the record at the link above, or over on Lucy’s Facebook page.&nbsp; The liner notes, plus some of my other writing and singing and lots of Lucy’s beautiful music can be heard in the August episode of Phil Smith’s Jass Dis-Junction on NTS radio. 2020July Excerpts from my slowly accreting new poetry manuscript were published in Two If By Sea Press’ online journal. These pieces were written while living under a library of glacial water in Stykkishólmur, Iceland. It was during this residency that I began to engage more consciously with writing as a situated, embodied practice.&nbsp; June I wrote a text for "Gentle stranger, I hope this email finds you well," a collection of letters written by artists around the world, all in some way touching on the subject of care.&nbsp; Curated by Sophie Mak-Schram and Alexander Norton over at Künstler Künstlerin, an artist platform based in Berlin. My offering to this project is an interspecies interlocution with a special Friend, an exploration of the muchness in our relationships with one another, and a tale of my intertwinement with a member of my own species. As well as a mishmash of much more multifarious muchness. May I wrote a foreword exploring the idea of lament as resistance for Lucy Railton’s “Lament in Three Parts”.
